Stylish Mazda2 Offers Good Value and Economy


The subcompact Mazda2 has been updated as the latest iteration of this 5-door hatchback arrived on the scene in 2012. This model improves upon its predecessor by advancing a sportier body style, increasing its fuel efficiency and offering more modern conveniences and choices. Sold in Sport and Touring editions, the Mazda2 is priced from $14,370 plus a $795 destination fee.

Engine and Transmissions

Every Mazda2 is powered by a 1.5-liter 16-valve four cylinder engine. This engine makes 100 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 98 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard; a 4-speed automatic transmission is optional. When equipped with a manual gearbox, this car is rated at 29 mpg city, 35 mpg highway. When paired with an automatic transmission, the hatchback delivers 28 mpg city, 34 mpg highway.

Mazda2 Dimensions

The 2012 Mazda2 sits on a 98.0-inch wheelbase and is 155.5 inches long, 66.7 inches wide and is 58.1 inches tall. This model has a 5.1-inch ground clearance.


Inside, the Mazda2 offers 87.1 cubic feet of passenger volume. It offers 13.3 cubic feet of standard cargo volume that is expanded to 27.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down.

Head room measures 39.1 inches in the front and 37.0 inches in the rear. Shoulder room comes in at 52.8 inches in the front and 51.2 inches in the rear. Hip room measures 50.9 inches up front and 46.8 inches in the rear. Leg room comes in at 42.6 inches in the front and 33.0 inches in the rear.

Safety Equipment and Warranties

Every Mazda2 comes equipped with a wide assortment of safety features including six airbags -- dual front, dual front seat-mounted side airbags and side curtain airbags. Front seatbelt pretensioners, lower anchors and tethers for children, and a tire pressure monitoring system are included. Traction control, stability control, four-wheel anti-lock brakes and brake assist are standard.

A new vehicle warranty offers bumper to bumper protection for three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. A 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 5-year, unlimited miles rust protection policy are included.

Popular Amenities

Despite it size and low price, the 2012 Mazda2 comes well equipped. Standard equipment includes air-conditioning, power windows and power door locks, keyless entry, a tilt steering column, a 12-volt power outlet, a rear window defogger and vanity mirrors. An AM/FM/CD/MP3-compatible stereo with 4 speakers and an auxiliary input jack are included.

Choose the Touring edition and several more features are brought in. These include cruise control, a 6-speaker audio system, steering wheel mounted audio controls and a trip computer. Available accessories include a center armrest, all-weather floor mats, a cargo net, a compass automatic dimming mirror with HomeLink, a rear bumper guard and wheel locks.
